At the dawn of Colossus' time, the explosion that eventually resulted in the creation of the planet, and the appearance of life, had left the elements in chaos and disarray. The spirits of nature spoke to each other, and they worked together to stabilize the young Colossus. This weakened the spirits, and as they observed blooming life from afar, they chose to appear as physical creatures to protect the world and its lifeforms. Like this, they were able to interact with the world without tiring themselves. The gigantic guardians of the world were seen as large "beasts" by the first Colossians and called such by the young race, and the Beasts embraced this name - though they were, first and foremost, nature spirits, they were more animal-like than spirit-like, having developed their own personalities and physically appearing as large furry creatures of great strength and toughness, much like the other creatures living on Colossus.

In order to allow such Beasts to exist, the spirits of nature used their powers together to create a very unique blood - the "Beast Blood". While the Beasts possessed normal blood they used to feed and power their bodies, they needed the Beast Blood to allow them to use their powers and be capable of at all existing in the physical world. But the Beast Blood would have to be safeguarded from the Colossian creatures to prevent them from tempering with such powers, and so the Blood was to be limited to Beasts only, and only a Beast could kill another Beast by absorbing its Blood, an action that forced the physical form of the Beast to become lifeless unless its Blood was given back.

It was useful for a Beast being needed to slay another Beast, as some of the Colossians attempted to defeat the Beasts themselves, seeing them either as prey that could feed their homes for a long time or as tyrants attempting to rule over them. Some even simply wanted to slay the Beasts for glory. These violent Colossians were known as "Skallbor".

Most of the members of the Colossian race was peaceful, and simply desired to go on with their lives without needless violence, as the Skallbor's lifestyles used. These were known as "Borskall."

The Borskall regarded the Beasts and their peaceable attitude fondly, and worshipped the Beasts. Some warriors wore monstrous masks and ragged cloaks to appear as beast-like spirits in the Beasts' honor. The Beasts, however, did not like to be worshipped, and instead befriended the Borskall. The Beasts and Colossians became friends, as the Beasts taught the Borskall how to live in harmony with their environment and taught them about the forces of the world.

They realized something the Skallbor did not - that hurting a Beast also hurt the world they lived in.
It's a thingie I wrote about the origins/creation of the Beasts some months ago.
